Dairy-free granola bars that actually taste good - and why it matters who they're made for

Most dairy-free granola bars are an afterthought, something reformulated to hit a label claim, not something built from the ground up with real ingredients and real intention. P&TY choose to be dairy free and why.
If you've ever flipped over a granola bar and found milk powder, whey protein, or butter oil tucked somewhere in the middle of the ingredient list - you're not imagining things. Dairy shows up in a surprising number of conventional bars, often not for nutritional reasons but because it's cheap, it extends shelf life, and most manufacturers don't expect anyone to look closely enough to notice.
We noticed. And we decided not to do it that way.
Why does dairy-free matter - and who is it really for?
The honest answer is: a lot more people than you might think. Dairy-free isn't a niche dietary preference anymore. It's a practical reality for a wide range of people navigating very different circumstances.
Families, kids with dairy sensitivities: Dairy sensitivities in children are among the most common food intolerances. Parents shouldn't have to squint at ingredient lists to find a snack that's safe for their kids.
Gut health, lactose intolerant adults: An estimated 65% of the global population has reduced ability to digest lactose after infancy. A bar that sits well is more valuable than one that doesn't.
New mamas, breastfeeding mothers: Many nursing moms eliminate dairy to reduce colic and discomfort in their babies. Our Mama May I bar was made specifically with that season of life in mind.
Everyone, people who just want cleaner food: You don't need a diagnosed condition to prefer a snack made without dairy fillers, milk derivatives, or ingredients you didn't ask for. Clean is for everyone.

"Dairy-free granola bars shouldn't be the exception. They should be a regular option, and they should taste like someone actually tried."
What we use instead and why it works better for our dairy-free granola bars
Going dairy-free only feels like a compromise if you were relying on dairy to do the heavy lifting. We weren't. Our bars are built on a foundation that doesn't need it.
Natural nut butters — peanut, hazelnut, almond — provide the richness, the binding, and the staying power that dairy is often used to deliver in conventional bars. Raw honey brings a depth of sweetness that no milk-based ingredient can match. Gluten-free oats, flaxseed, and real mix-ins like shredded coconut, pumpkin seeds, and dried cranberries do the rest.
The result isn't a dairy-free bar that tastes like something is missing. It's a bar that tastes like nothing needed to be added in the first place.
Before you go: Are you dairy-free by choice, by necessity, or somewhere in between?
